Phantasmal Flames is the third set in the Mega Evolution era, arriving hot on the heels of Ascended Heroes and Perfect Order with a sharp focus on Fire-type Pokémon. The set's 43 secret rares make it one of the denser chase sets in the Mega Evolution series — roughly a third of the total card count sits above the main set number — which makes booster box pulls feel genuinely rewarding but also means completing the full set is a serious undertaking.
Mechanically, Phantasmal Flames leans hard into the Burn status condition, with a clutch of new Stadiums and Trainer cards designed to keep Fire-types burning opponents across multiple turns. Mega Blaziken ex is the marquee card, but the set's real talking point for collectors is something else entirely.
Collector's Log: Mega Charizard X ex is Moving
The card everyone is watching right now is Mega Charizard X ex. Its price has been climbing steadily since release and shows no signs of cooling — the combination of Charizard's perennial demand, the Mega Evolution nostalgia factor, and the X variant's distinctive black-and-blue aesthetic is proving to be a powerful market cocktail.
For anyone still trying to acquire it at a reasonable price, the window is narrowing. If you're building toward a master set or just want the headline card secured, this is one to prioritise sooner rather than later.
The rest of the Special Illustration Rares are comparatively accessible right now — Rotom ex, Mega Sharpedo ex, Mega Lopunny ex, and Dawn are all reasonably priced — but Charizard has a way of pulling everything else up with it over time. Worth noting too that this set has two distinct Mega Charizard X ex SIRs (125/094 and 130/094 are different artworks), meaning completionists need both.
Special Illustration Rares
Phantasmal Flames contains 6 Special Illustration Rares. Ordered by card number:

|---|---|---|
|
Mega Charizard X ex 125/094 · Special Illustration Rare |
The set's headline chase card. Price is actively climbing — Charizard demand combined with Mega Evolution nostalgia and the X variant's iconic black-and-blue design is driving significant market interest. Prioritise this one. |
|
Rotom ex 126/094 · Special Illustration Rare |
A fan-favourite Pokémon making a strong impression in the Mega Evolution era. Rotom's versatility and broad appeal keep it in demand with both collectors and players. |
|
Mega Sharpedo ex 127/094 · Special Illustration Rare |
Dark/Water typing gives Mega Sharpedo a distinctive visual identity. Its aggressive design translates well to full-art treatment and it's proven more popular at market than expected. |
|
Mega Lopunny ex 128/094 · Special Illustration Rare |
Normal/Fighting typing with elegant artwork. Mega Lopunny has a loyal following and the SIR treatment showcases it beautifully — a sleeper pick for long-term value. |
|
Dawn 129/094 · Special Illustration Rare |
The set's Trainer SIR. Dawn is a beloved Sinnoh character and her SIR artwork is a standout — character card collectors and Sinnoh fans alike will want this one secured. |
|
Mega Charizard X ex 130/094 · Special Illustration Rare |
The second Mega Charizard X ex SIR — a different artwork to 125/094. Having two distinct SIR treatments of the same card in one set is rare and fuels demand for both. If Charizard X is your target, you need both. |
