Paradox Rift set overview
Paradox Rift is the fourth main set of the Scarlet & Violet series. It went on sale on 3 November 2023. The Build & Battle Box for prerelease events reached select retailers from 21 October, and the set arrived in Pokémon TCG Live on 2 November. It has 266 cards: a 182-card main list and 84 secret rares numbered 183/182 to 266/182.
The set is built around the Paradox Pokémon of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and adds two new card labels, Ancient and Future. Each label has its own background on the right half of the card: layered rock for Ancient, pixels for Future. Ancient Pokémon tend to rely on big attacks; Future Pokémon lean on Abilities and extra effects. Roaring Moon ex and Sandy Shocks ex lead the Ancient side, Iron Valiant ex and Iron Hands ex the Future side, and each side has its own Booster Energy Capsule. The main list has 20 Pokémon ex. Seven of them are type-shifted Tera Pokémon ex, such as a Water-type Garchomp ex (038/182) and a Lightning-type Mewtwo ex (058/182). Technical Machines also return, now as Pokémon Tools, for the first time since Rising Rivals in 2009.
The English list combines the Japanese twin sets Ancient Roar and Future Flash with most of the Raging Surf subset and cards from the two Terastal Starter Sets. The changes are listed below.
- 266Cards
- 84Secret rares
- 222Pokémon
- 42Trainers

What changed from the Japanese sets
- Merged: Ancient Roar and Future Flash, released together in Japan, form the core of the set. Ancient Roar supplies the Ancient Pokémon and Future Flash the Future ones.
- Added from Raging Surf: 50 of the subset's 62 main cards and all 30 of its secret rares, including Garchomp ex (038/182), Tapu Koko ex (068/182), Gholdengo ex (139/182) and the Groudon Illustration Rare (199/182).
- Added from the Terastal Starter Sets: Mewtwo ex (058/182) and Skeledirge ex (137/182), with Natu, Xatu, Deoxys, Volcanion, Fuecoco and Crocalor. Neither ex has a secret rare version in the set.
- Moved to promos: the Scream Tail art rare from Ancient Roar and the Iron Bundle art rare from Future Flash became the Elite Trainer Box promos (SVP 065 and SVP 066). The regular Scream Tail and Iron Bundle are still in the main list.
- Left out: the gold Basic Darkness Energy and Basic Metal Energy; Maractus, Numel, Camerupt, Woobat, Swoobat, Clobbopus and Grapploct from Ancient Roar; Chimecho from Future Flash; and 12 Raging Surf cards, among them the Gastly line. Most came to English in Paldean Fates on 26 January 2024.
- Numbering: 182 main cards against 132 across the two Japanese sets, and 84 secret rares against 58.

Collector's notes
Non-holo prints from the Build & Battle Box
Iron Moth (028/182), Chi-Yu (029/182), Golisopod (049/182), Xatu (072/182), Espathra (081/182) and Aegislash (134/182) are holo Rares in booster packs. The Build & Battle Box decks, also sold two to a Build & Battle Stadium, carry non-holo versions of all six. A master set that counts these variants needs cards from those boxes.
Stamped and Cosmos Holo versions
Retailers gave away reverse holo Iron Moth cards with a stamp as a gift with purchase: "GameStop" in the US and Canada, "EB Games" in Australia and New Zealand, and "Paradox Rift" in Europe. Best Buy in the US gave out a reverse holo Slither Wing (107/182) with the "Paradox Rift" stamp. The Roaring Moon ex Box added Cosmos Holo versions of Brute Bonnet (123/182) and Ancient Booster Energy Capsule (159/182), and the Iron Valiant ex Box did the same for Iron Moth and Future Booster Energy Capsule (164/182).
Two art rares that went into Elite Trainer Boxes
Ancient Roar and Future Flash have 12 art rares each, but only 11 of each made it into English packs. The missing two, Scream Tail and Iron Bundle, became the Elite Trainer Box promos (SVP 065 and SVP 066), so they have no number in the 183/182 to 216/182 run of Illustration Rares. The Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Boxes add a second copy with a Pokémon Center stamp.
Gold cards with no regular print in this set
Beach Court (263/182) and Reversal Energy (266/182) appear in Paradox Rift only as gold Hyper Rares; both came from Raging Surf. Their regular versions are in Scarlet & Violet and Paldea Evolved.
