Base Set 2 set overview
Base Set 2 is the fourth English expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released by Wizards of the Coast on 24 February 2000, between Fossil and Team Rocket. It has no new cards. All 130 are reprints from the first two English sets, Base Set and Jungle, renumbered into a single list.
Base Set supplied 94 cards and Jungle 36. The Pokémon run from 001/130 to 100/130 by rarity, Holo Rares first, then Rares, Uncommons and Commons, alphabetical within each group, so the Jungle cards are mixed in with the Base Set cards. The 23 Trainers and seven Energy cards follow at 101/130 to 130/130. The set has no Japanese equivalent expansion, and it was printed only in English.
The artwork is unchanged from the originals, but the holo foil is not: Bulbapedia records Base Set 2 as the first English set to use Cosmos holofoil. Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur and the other Base Set holos appear here with a /130 number in place of /102, which is the quickest way to tell a Base Set 2 copy from an original.

What Base Set 2 reprinted, and what changed
- From Base Set: 94 of the 102 cards: 15 of its 16 Holo Rares (all but Machamp), all six non-holo Rare Pokémon, every Uncommon and Common Pokémon except Porygon, Koffing and Ponyta, 22 of the 26 Trainers and all seven Energy cards.
- Left out of Base Set's list: Machamp, Porygon, Koffing and Ponyta, and the Trainers Clefairy Doll, Devolution Spray, Pokémon Flute and Revive.
- From Jungle: 36 cards. Clefable (005/130), Nidoqueen (012/130), Pidgeot (014/130), Scyther (017/130) and Wigglytuff (019/130) are Holo Rares. Kangaskhan (026/130), Mr. Mime (027/130), Pinsir (029/130), Snorlax (030/130), Venomoth (031/130) and Victreebel (032/130) are non-holo Rares. Jungle printed each of those 11 in both a holo and a non-holo version; Base Set 2 kept only one. The other Jungle cards are 13 Uncommons, 11 Commons and the Poké Ball Trainer (121/130).
- Left out of Jungle's list: Eevee and its three evolutions Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon, the Oddish, Gloom and Vileplume line, Mankey and Primeape, and Rapidash. Jungle's own Pikachu and Electrode were dropped too: Pikachu (087/130) and Electrode (025/130) in Base Set 2 are the Base Set cards.
- Numbering: every card is numbered out of 130, and the Jungle cards sit in the same alphabetical runs as the Base Set cards instead of in their own block.
Base Set 2 chase cards
The six cards below are the most expensive singles in the set by market price on 4 October 2026. The most expensive of all on that date was Charizard (004/130, Holo Rare). Charizard (004/130) is the set's best-known card. It is Mitsuhiro Arita's Base Set artwork, reprinted with the Energy Burn Pokémon Power and Fire Spin attack unchanged. The other two final-stage first partners are holos too: Blastoise (002/130) by Ken Sugimori and Venusaur (018/130) by Arita. Every one of the 20 Holo Rares was a holo in Base Set or Jungle first. Base Set 2 was printed only as Unlimited, so TCGplayer lists each card once: holofoil for the 20 Holo Rares and regular for the other 110. The Prices by printing table in the prices section compares those two groups.
Base Set 2 card list
Every card in the set is below in set-number order, with its rarity, illustrator and market price. The 20 Holo Rares are 001/130 to 020/130 and the 12 non-holo Rare Pokémon are 021/130 to 032/130. The Trainers start at Computer Search (101/130), and eight of them, through Super Energy Removal (108/130), are Rares. Double Colorless Energy (124/130) is the only Uncommon Energy card. Base Set 2 illustrators
4 illustrators are credited across the set, carried over with the Base Set and Jungle artwork. Ken Sugimori, who drew the original artwork for the Pokémon games, has the most credits, including Blastoise, Mewtwo and the Trainers with people on them, such as Lass, Bill and Professor Oak. Mitsuhiro Arita drew Charizard, Venusaur and Gyarados, and starters such as Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur. Keiji Kinebuchi drew most of the item Trainers, such as Computer Search and Item Finder, plus Pokémon such as Magneton and Haunter. Kagemaru Himeno drew Pidgeot, the only Holo Rare credited to Himeno, and Jungle cards such as Pinsir, Tauros and Rhydon. Each tile leads with the artist's highest-value card in the set; the name links to their entry in the illustrator database.

Base Set 2 products and sealed prices
Base Set 2 was sold in 11-card booster packs, in four theme decks and in a 2-Player CD-ROM Starter Set. The theme decks were Grass Chopper, Hot Water, Lightning Bug and Psych Out. The starter set held 61 cards, two 30-card half decks plus a Machamp, with a Pokémon Play It! CD-ROM that taught the rules, a rulebook, damage counters, a coin and a playmat. TCGplayer sells the four theme decks as separate products, but our price data does not record which deck is which, so the theme deck price below is for one of the four. Sealed prices are market prices from the same snapshot as the singles, and "No listing" means the snapshot had no market price for that product.
Collector's notes
Telling it apart from Base Set and Jungle
A Base Set 2 card is numbered out of 130, where Base Set cards are out of 102 and Jungle cards out of 64. The artwork is the same as on the originals, so the number is the reliable check. Base Set 2 cards also carry a small set symbol below the bottom right corner of the artwork, which Base Set cards do not have, and the Holo Rares use a different holo foil.
No 1st Edition
Bulbapedia records that Base Set 2 was printed only in English and without a 1st Edition run. Every copy is an Unlimited print, so there is no edition premium to check for, unlike Base Set and Jungle. A listing that calls a Base Set 2 card "1st Edition" is mislabelled.
One version of each Jungle rare
Jungle printed its 16 rares twice, once holo and once non-holo. Base Set 2 kept a single version of 11 of them: five as holos and six as non-holo Rares. There is no holo Snorlax or non-holo Scyther with a /130 number, so the set has no holo/non-holo pairs: 130 cards, plus the W-stamped Wartortle below for promo collectors.
The Wartortle W promo
Wartortle (063/130) was also given away with Top Deck magazine in March 2000, with a gold foil W stamp. It keeps the 63/130 number, so check for the stamp before filing a copy with the regular ones.

Look at the number in the bottom right corner. Base Set Charizard is 4/102 and Base Set 2 Charizard is 4/130, and only the Base Set 2 card has a set symbol under the artwork. The artwork, Energy Burn Pokémon Power and Fire Spin attack are the same on both.
