Set Overview

Base Set was the first Pokémon TCG release in English, published on 9 January 1999 by Wizards of the Coast. It adapted Japan's original Expansion Pack and contains 102 cards: 69 Pokémon, 26 Trainers and 7 Energy. It was printed in three main runs — 1st Edition, Shadowless and Unlimited — which is the main thing that affects a card's value today.

About the Set

Base Set established the card layout still used today: the yellow border, HP in the top-right, and the weakness / resistance / retreat row along the bottom. The 16 holo rares are cards 1–16, including Charizard 4/102. The rest of the set covers familiar Gen I Pokémon, Wizards-era Trainers such as Professor Oak and Bill, and the seven basic Energy cards.

How to identify a Base Set card: it has no set symbol next to the artwork — the only main English expansion without one. Shadowless cards lack the drop shadow down the right edge of the art box; 1st Edition cards carry the 1st Edition stamp on the left.

Key Cards

The most collected cards in the set are the three Kanto starter holos and Mewtwo. Charizard is the best known and the most valuable.

Card Name Why it matters
Charizard 4/102 Charizard 4/102 Holographic Rare The most valuable card in the set. High-grade 1st Edition copies sell for very large sums, and it remains the best-known Pokémon card.
Blastoise 2/102 Blastoise 2/102 Holographic Rare The Water starter holo. A staple of any Base Set holo collection and one of the three starter chase cards.
Venusaur 15/102 Venusaur 15/102 Holographic Rare The Grass starter holo, completing the Kanto starter trio alongside Charizard and Blastoise.
Mewtwo 10/102 Mewtwo 10/102 Holographic Rare A popular Psychic holo and a strong attacker in early play thanks to its Barrier attack.

Collecting & Where to Buy

Base Set has been out of print for over two decades, so sealed product and singles only trade on the secondary market. Price depends mostly on printing (1st Edition is worth more than Shadowless, which is worth more than Unlimited), condition and grade. Check all three before buying.

Collector tip: for a cheaper way in, Unlimited holos and non-holo commons are still affordable, and Base Set 2 (2000) reprinted much of the same artwork. For graded cards, use a well-known grading company and confirm the printing before paying a premium.
