The Announcement

During the Pokémon Day 2026 Pokémon Presents livestream, Game Freak revealed Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves — the Generation 10 mainline titles, exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. A 2027 release window was confirmed, making this the first mainline Pokémon game to skip a release year since the Generation 8 to 9 gap.

The reveal trailer showed a new archipelago region inspired by Southeast Asia, three new starter Pokémon, and gameplay footage including open-world exploration and seamless underwater diving. The “Pokémon 30th Anniversary” (1996–2026) branding featured prominently throughout.

The New Starter Pokémon

Three new starters were introduced by name in the trailer. No evolutions were shown.

Browt — Grass-type starter

Grass-type
A small green bird with distinct plumage. Currently the least discussed of the three starters, though its grumpy expression — compared by fans to Rowlet but with an “attitude problem” — has generated steady meme traffic online.
Pombon — Fire-type starter
Pombon
Fire-type
A small canine Pokémon drawing clear comparisons to a Pomeranian. The breakout star of the reveal — fan art flooded social media within hours. The main community concern is whether its final evolution will remain quadrupedal, a recurring frustration with recent Fire starters.
Gecqua — Water-type starter

Water-type
An aquatic lizard shown with a distinct underwater swimming animation. Slightly overshadowed by Pombon in the immediate aftermath of the reveal, though its unique movement style has attracted a vocal fanbase praising its design and animations.

The Region

The new setting is a tropical archipelago inspired by Southeast Asia. The trailer showed a range of environments: dense jungles, mangrove swamps, terraced landscapes, futuristic resort areas, and lava caves. Players from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia have been picking out specific architectural and environmental references in the footage.

Both male and female protagonists were shown in the trailer.

The trailer also introduced Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu, two Pikachu characters confirmed to be involved in the game. Further details on their roles have not been revealed.

Gameplay Features

Two headline mechanics were shown in the trailer: open-world exploration and underwater gameplay. Diving was shown as a confirmed feature, with footage of the player character moving between the ocean surface and underwater environments.

Feature Detail
Open World Confirmed. The trailer showed free exploration across the archipelago, continuing the direction established in Scarlet & Violet.
Underwater Gameplay Confirmed. Footage showed the player character moving between the ocean surface and underwater environments.
Battle Gimmick Not shown in the trailer. Nothing has been confirmed.
Visual Fidelity The trailer showed improved water effects and character models compared to Generation 9.

Community Reception

The initial reaction has been positive. The 2027 release date — which skips 2026 entirely — has been broadly welcomed rather than criticised. After the performance issues that followed the launch of Scarlet & Violet, the general community sentiment is that additional development time is preferable to a rushed release on new hardware.

Pombon is generating the most immediate conversation, with fan art circulating rapidly following the reveal. The quadruped vs. biped final evolution debate — a recurring point of contention with recent Fire starters — is already active in community spaces.

On the 2027 release window: Winds and Waves is the first mainline Pokémon title confirmed exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, with a 2027 release window.
