The European Space Agency and The Pokémon Company International will run a joint campaign for World Space Week, 4–10 October 2026. ESA announced it on 4 August 2026. No products, events, locations or further dates have been announced.
What was announced
ESA published the announcement on its Branding and Partnerships page on 4 August 2026. It contains the following:
- The partners are ESA and The Pokémon Company International (TPCi), the Bellevue-based company that manages the Pokémon brand outside Asia.
- The campaign is tied to World Space Week, 4–10 October 2026.
- ESA describes it as a unique, limited-time collaboration.
- It supports ESA's ambition, set out in Strategy 2040, to inspire Europe.
- Further details will be revealed "soon." No date was given.
Anne-Sophie Bradelle, Head of ESA's Communication Department, said working with Pokémon is "a unique opportunity for ESA to connect broad audiences with space through creative storytelling."
ESA announcement, 4 August 2026The remainder of the release states that both organisations want to inspire new generations, that discovery begins with curiosity, and that the collaboration is intended to build bridges between space, science and storytelling. The closing line tells fans to "fasten their space helmets and get their Pokédexes ready."
The key art
One image was released with the announcement. Pikachu wears a blue flight suit with a winged badge on the chest, a name patch on the shoulder and a circular mission patch carrying a lightning bolt. Concentric orbit rings surround it, with coloured dots on the rings. The Pokémon and ESA logos sit below, above the text WORLD SPACE WEEK 2026 · 4 OCTOBER – 10 OCTOBER.
The garment is a flight suit, not a pressure suit. Flight suits are the blue coveralls ESA astronauts wear on the ground and in training. The white hard suit used outside a spacecraft is a different item.
What is not confirmed
The announcement contains no product or event information. Some coverage has reported it as though a product exists.
No TCG card. No promo. No video game content or event. No merchandise. No app tie-in. No exhibition, museum event or venue. No Pokémon beyond Pikachu. No confirmation of which countries or ESA sites are involved, or whether anything physical is planned.
ESA is an intergovernmental science organisation rather than a licensor of consumer products. Its usual output around an observance week is educational: broadcasts, classroom material, downloadable resources, social content, and events at its own establishments. TPCi may contribute something separate. Neither approach has been stated.
What World Space Week is
World Space Week is a United Nations observance, declared by the General Assembly on 6 December 1999. The dates mark two events:
| Date | What it marks |
|---|---|
| 4 October | The 1957 launch of Sputnik 1, the first human-made satellite placed in Earth orbit. |
| 10 October | The 1967 entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty, the agreement that governs state activity in space. |
It is coordinated by the World Space Week Association with the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs. Events are organised locally through national coordinators rather than run as a single central programme. The 2025 edition recorded around 50,000 events across 102 countries.
Each year has a theme. The 2026 theme is Rocket Revolution, covering changes in launch: reusable rockets, small launchers, and commercial and university operators.
ESA's stated reason
ESA is an intergovernmental organisation created in 1975. It has 23 member states, four associate members, and a cooperation agreement with Canada.
Strategy 2040 is ESA's long-range plan. It is built around five goals, the fifth of which is "Inspire Europe." The Pokémon announcement cites that goal directly. ESA gave no other stated reason for the collaboration.
The campaign also falls in the year of Pokémon's 30th anniversary. ESA did not reference the anniversary.
The JAXA precedent
ESA is not the first space agency Pokémon has worked with. In JAXA's Space Sunrise Live broadcast welcoming 2021, augmented-reality Pikachu and Rayquaza appeared alongside astronaut Soichi Noguchi aboard the International Space Station, in a livestream from the Kibō module.
The JAXA appearance produced no cards, merchandise or game content. It was a single broadcast segment. It is the only prior example of Pokémon working with a national or regional space agency.
Space in the Pokémon games
Space has featured in the series since the first generation. These are the main examples.
- Mossdeep Space Center. Hoenn's rocket facility, introduced in Ruby and Sapphire.
- Clefairy and the Moon Stone. Mt. Moon in Kanto links the species to the Moon.
- Deoxys. The Pokédex gives its origin as a space virus that mutated after exposure to a laser beam.
- Lunatone and Solrock. Both introduced in Hoenn. The Pokédex connects both to a meteorite.
- Minior. The Pokédex places it in the ozone layer, from which it falls to the ground.
- Elgyem and Beheeyem. Unova's grey-alien Pokémon. The Pokédex says Elgyem first appeared in a desert around fifty years before the games.
- Cosmog, Solgaleo and Lunala. Alola's line, built around wormholes and Ultra Space.
- Rayquaza. Lives in the ozone layer.
What happens next
ESA said details are coming "soon" and gave no date. The campaign opens on 4 October 2026.
The announcement was published on esa.int and ESA's social accounts. It was not issued through Pokémon's newsroom.
