Lore
Darkrai is a Dark-type Mythical from Sinnoh, classified as the "Pitch-Black Pokémon." It lives alone on Newmoon Island and its ability, Bad Dreams, causes nightmares in anyone nearby while they sleep. The Pokédex is consistent that this isn't malicious — it's involuntary. Darkrai isolates itself because proximity to it tends to go badly for everyone else.
Its counterpart is Cresselia, who resides on Fullmoon Island. Cresselia's Lunar Wing feathers are the only cure for Darkrai-induced nightmares. The name combines "Dark" with kurai (暗い), Japanese for "dark" or "gloomy." The design is loosely based on the boogeyman — a formless shadow with a ghostly wisp at its head.

In-Game
Catching Darkrai in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum required a real-world event item — the Member Card — from Nintendo events in 2007–2008. It unlocked the Harbor Inn in Canalave City, where a nameless man puts the player to bed ("We have kept a bed for you"), and they wake up on Newmoon Island facing Darkrai. The inn is locked again when they return. The event was never re-run, so a lot of players never got it legitimately.
The most recent legitimate distribution was in Scarlet & Violet — a Mystery Gift code (NEWM00N1SC0M1NG) was available from December 7–21, 2023, timed to the last new moon of the year. It's now expired.
Darkrai's signature move Dark Void originally had 80% accuracy and hit both opponents in doubles. Because Darkrai is banned from VGC, players used Smeargle (who can copy any move via Sketch) to run it legally — which dominated the 2016 World Championships. Gen VII nerfed Dark Void to 50% accuracy and hard-coded it to fail if used by anything other than Darkrai.
Mega Darkrai — Legends: Z-A
The Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A dropped on December 10, 2025, and gave Darkrai its first-ever Mega Evolution. The reaction online was immediate — players compared it to H.P. Lovecraft and Dark Souls. The design features Darkrai's head emerging from a circular, tooth-lined void with a giant eye at its centre.
To get it, you need to complete the Mega Dimension's main story campaign — specifically the Hyperspace Lumiose Survey No. 6 mission, which requires crafting the Bad Dreams Cruller Donut. After that, a scripted level 200 boss fight triggers: Darkrai first fights in its base form, then Mega Evolves mid-battle. Defeating it allows you to catch it; the Darkranite Mega Stone is given automatically afterward.

Mystery Dungeon: Explorers
In Explorers of Time / Darkness / Sky, Darkrai is the secret villain — responsible for Temporal Tower's collapse (which would freeze time globally) and directly responsible for the player losing their memories and being turned into a Pokémon. The reveal comes late in Sky's special episodes and is well executed. Worth playing if you haven't.
Darkrai in the Anime
The Rise of Darkrai
Darkrai's debut film. Alamos Town gets caught in the middle of a fight between Dialga and Palkia, and the townspeople blame Darkrai for the destruction. Instead of leaving, Darkrai fights back against both Legendaries to protect the town. It's the clearest version of the "misunderstood protector" angle the character keeps coming back to.
Tobias's Darkrai
Tobias entered the Sinnoh League and beat every opponent he faced using only Darkrai. Nobody else got close. In the semi-finals against Ash, Darkrai took out most of his team before losing to Sceptile — which was treated as a genuine upset. It's a frustrating arc for obvious reasons, but Darkrai's sheer dominance is hard to forget.
Nightfall? Nightmares! / A Midsummer Night's Light
A two-parter with Ash, Dawn, Goh, and Chloe. Darkrai and Cresselia are in conflict, and Darkrai ends up defending an injured Cresselia from Team Rocket's Matori Matrix. Mostly notable for actually showing the Lunar Duo dynamic in the anime after years of it just being lore text.
