Lore
Rayquaza is a Dragon/Flying-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation III, classified as the "Sky High Pokémon." It debuted in Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire (2002), though it became far more prominent as the box mascot for Pokémon Emerald (2004). It lives permanently in the upper atmosphere — the ozone layer — at an altitude so extreme no other Pokémon can reach it. Its Japanese name is レックウザ (Rekkuuza).
Rayquaza forms the top tier of Hoenn's Weather Trio alongside Kyogre and Groudon. Where Kyogre controls rain and Groudon controls drought, Rayquaza's role is to mediate: it descends from the sky to stop the two when their conflict threatens the world. According to lore, it has lived in the atmosphere for hundreds of millions of years, feeding on water and other particles, and its body glows when flying.
Kyogre — The Sea Basin
Controls the rain and the sea. Expands the ocean in its primal state. Rayquaza is its ancient rival and the only Pokémon capable of calming it.
Groudon — The Continent
Controls the land and sunlight. Expands the continents in its primal state. The conflict between Groudon and Kyogre is the central disaster Rayquaza is destined to prevent.
Design and Etymology
The official Japanese name Rekkuuza (レックウザ) derives from rekkū (烈空, "fierce sky") and za (座, "seat" or "constellation"). In English, it's widely read as a portmanteau of "ray" and "quasar."
Stats & Battle Profile
Rayquaza has a BST of 680 in base form, rising to 780 with Mega Evolution — one of the highest in the game. It's an offensive juggernaut with elite Attack and Special Attack, reasonable bulk for a sweeper, and a middling Speed tier that Mega Evolution fixes.
Mega Rayquaza
Rayquaza's Mega Evolution is unique in the series — it requires no Mega Stone. Instead, it Mega Evolves by simply knowing the move Dragon Ascent. The lore rationale is that Rayquaza's body naturally accumulates enough energy from the atmosphere to sustain the transformation without an external catalyst. It's the only Pokémon with this property.

In-Game
In the original Ruby & Sapphire, Rayquaza plays no role in the main story — you deal with Kyogre or Groudon directly via the Cave of Origin, and the Sky Pillar is strictly an optional post-game location. It was Pokémon Emerald (2004) that elevated Rayquaza to story centrepiece: with both Kyogre and Groudon awakening simultaneously, the player must climb the Sky Pillar — navigating its crumbling floors by Mach Bike — to summon Rayquaza and stop the conflict. Catchable at level 70.
In Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire (2014), Rayquaza became central to the story rather than a side note. The Delta Episode — ORAS's post-game narrative — sends the player into space on Rayquaza's back to destroy an incoming meteor, with Rayquaza Mega Evolving mid-cutscene.
Rayquaza has been distributed via Mystery Gift on multiple occasions. Most recently, a Shiny Rayquaza Tera Raid event ran from December 19, 2024 to January 5, 2025 in Scarlet & Violet, timed as a tie-in with the Pokémon Horizons anime.
Anime
Destiny Deoxys
Rayquaza's anime debut. When Deoxys arrived from space and entered the atmosphere, Rayquaza attacked it — believing it was an invader in its territory, though Deoxys was in fact searching for its partner. Their battle carried into LaRousse City below.
Hoopa and the Clash of Ages
Mega Rayquaza had already appeared in Pokémon: Mega Evolution Special II (late 2014), where it Mega Evolved without a Trainer and repelled both Alain's Mega Charizard X and Steven's Mega Metagross. The Hoopa film is where Shiny Mega Rayquaza made its anime debut, summoned by Hoopa alongside several other Legendaries.
The Black Rayquaza — Lucius and the Six Heroes
A Shiny black Rayquaza is one of the central threads of Pokémon Horizons: The Series. It was Lucius's first Pokémon — part of the "Six Heroes," the team the ancient adventurer assembled on his journey to find Laqua. The Rayquaza was contained in an Ancient Poké Ball that Roy finds at the start of the series; it emerges early on and flies away, with Roy's attempts to find and catch it becoming a core motivation throughout. Roy catches Rayquaza in HZ129, and later Mega Evolves it in battle in HZ136.
